Who we are

Carla Schmidt
Formerly Translations Director and Business German Language Trainer with the LX Centre at Manchester Polytechnic, Carla founded LBC in 1992. She is a native German speaker, with qualifications in business studies and languages (English / Spanish / German). She is a qualified translator and interpreter, an adult education teacher and an OCR examiner for German. She has extensive export sales experience gained in manufacturing industries in Germany, Spain and the U.K. and particularly enjoys working with businesses planning to break into European markets, especially Germany, the UK and Spain, where she may act as European sales or customer liaison officer, representing at trade fairs or working alongside teams on sales visits or handling sales presentations.

As a translator, she has worked on projects in a wide variety of areas, including textile & clothing technology, web sites, chemical process additives, corrosion control instrumentation, mechanical engineering, legal & contractual, mail order copy and digital processes. Because of her business experience, she enjoys writing training materials for business German, including specialised glossaries.

Both directors have trained as Export Communication Consultants and can therefore present step-by-step recommendations to improve the ways you present the company to overseas customers, thus maximising export performance.

Eric Brass
A languages graduate and trained teacher, he has taught Spanish and French at all levels and to all ages throughout his career. He also taught business English at the Jesuit Business College "ESADE" in Barcelona, where he first developed his interest in customised language training in association with IBM. Latterly a Senior Lecturer and Head of Business Languages at City College, Manchester, he was one of the founders of the Manchester LX Centre and Languages Projects Manager for City College. In the early days of corporate language training, he led a series of seminars at Manchester Polytechnic for aspiring language trainers on topics such as Language Audits and Training Needs Analyses, Customised Course Design, Tutor Training etc. He is also a prolific writer of language aids and specialised course materials. He joined LBC in 1996.
