Did you know that ……
Portuguese is the third most spoken European language in the world, after English and Spanish, and before more popular languages like French or German. According to Ethnologue: Languages of the World, 15th ed. (2005), over 200 million speak it as a native language, plus an extra 10 million who claim it as a second language, ranking it sixth in the world.
It is the official language in nine countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal and Sâo Tomè e Prîncipe.
Portuguese (along with Spanish) is the fastest-growing European language, and, following estimates by UNESCO it is the language with the highest potential of growth as an international communication language in southern Africa and South America.
There are two main groups of dialect: European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese, each one with its own peculiarities of grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.
Portugal and the UK have always had strong economic ties; Britain is one of the main foreign investors in Portugal and in 2005 the investments amounted to £2.5bn, according to the UKTI.
Brazil is the UK's most important partner in Latin America, with a 2.6% market share, as well as one of the biggest and more populated countries in the world with 182.8 million inhabitants in 2005.
If you are looking for a language with a future, don't hesitate to start as soon as possible learning what the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes once called "the sweet language".
